Having a bash at the balsam and litter in Tod

For a number of years Calder Future has assisted the community group TRIG to manage the Tipside open space behind Todmorden Market Hall. This site is important, as it provides a half kilometre traffic-free route to enjoy the River Calder near the town centre.

We had a group from Day Services in Halifax which was a re-run of a very successful 'balsam bash' that we had two days ago. The joint team of staff and service users tackled the invasive Himalayan balsam at the bottom end of the site, behind the garages - they said it was like the 'Day of the Trifids'!

During the morning a separate group of local young men, recruited by Todmorden Together, donned waders to enter the river and clear the rubbish that has been dumped, or which has washed down from upstream. They easily filled a skip by lunchtime. Todmorden is close to the source of the River Calder, and so this is a great help to keeping the whole river clean if we can manage to salvage any litter from this end of the valley first.
