Making a difference to Mytholmroyd

Cutting a path thro' on the riverbank

One of the main employers in the village of Mytholmroyd, Sweet and Maxwell (legal publishers), contacted the local vicar to find out what their staff could do to help with improving the riverbank, adjacent to the Church. Calder Future have held activities every year with the Reverend Allison's youth group to clear vegetation on the river, and to control the Himalayan balsam. The link was duly made between Calder Future and the local business, and two days of activities in mid-July enabled us to get some large parties of volunteers clearing the overgrown banking, and a professional video recording was made of the event as well (Sweet & Maxwell being part of Thomson media group).

The video shows the staff really enjoying getting out in the fresh air, finding out about the riverside and using tools to remove the vegetation. The picture shows the long grass on the river's edge being cut back with slashers. Other volunteers were at the same time opening up the path from the Church to the bowling green, whilst a further group blitzed the balsam further downstream (see second photo). As well as making a video, the company produced special T-shirts for the event.Pulling balsam on the river at M'royd
