Partnership working to spruce up the canal

C&H clean-up at Brighouse

British Waterways has enlisted the help of Calder Future and local community groups and businesses to involve volunteers in managing their stretch of towpath and canal. There is a lot of work that local people can do, given the tools, such as clearing litter and vegetation and keeping the towpath free of overhanging trees and slippery moss amongst the setts.

We had assistance from the Calder Navigation Society and their work-boat at the end of October half-term week in Brighouse. They were then able to reach parts of the waterway that ordinary volunteers cannot reach! The Pennine Canoe Club brought some canoes down for people to have a go on the water as well, fishing out litter and clearing the far side of the waterway.  Some excellent images of the day are available to view at http://johnsteelphotography.com/corporate/?p=1050

In Sowerby Bridge a local group of waterway enthusiasts has been set up to run a workday at least once a month, alternating them between weekends and weekdays to make it easier to attend. By having an experienced set of people to help run the activities it is easier to liaise with the two regional offices of British Waterways to make sure that both the Rochdale Canal and the Calder & Hebble Navigation receive some attention (the two waterways meet at Sowerby Bridge Wharf). See some photos of what we have done below; remember to check the events calendar where more workdays in association with British Waterways will be advertised as they are arranged.
